A research team led by Professor Kaizu of the University of Tokyo Graduate School has successfully completed a highly challenging rescue mission at the Japan Innovation Challenge 2025, a competition to rescue stranded people in harsh mountainous areas.
Why was our mobile robot platform, CuGo MEGA , adopted on a rugged forest road with rocky areas and ditches? We will introduce the deciding factors and results.
- Unparalleled reliability: "It will never break down." While other teams struggled with falling off crawlers and mechanical problems, CuGo MEGA managed to transport 50 kg without stopping even once. The peace of mind of "not having to worry about the undercarriage" was the key to the mission's success.
- Concentrating research resources on the higher-level system : Because the hardware, the mobility mechanism, is already a completed product, the team can focus on developing advanced software such as remote control, satellite communications (Starlink), and stereo cameras.
- On to the next-generation model, the CuGo MEGA M2 : This achievement has been carried over to the successor model, the M2, which is currently on sale. The adoption of a brushless motor has further improved controllability on uneven ground.
This undercarriage supports the front lines of field robotics, continuing to function even in unexpected locations such as when there are no roads due to landslides.
